Boston Red Sox fans rejoiced on Wednesday as news broke that the franchise and Roman Anthony are finalizing a contract extension.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed that Boston and Anthony are working on a four-year, $130 million extension that is pending a physical.

Anthony’s extension reportedly also included escalators that could increase the value of the deal to $230 million.

Red Sox infielder Marcelo Mayer, a close friend of Anthony’s, was among the players and fans to celebrate the news on social media; Mayer shared his excitement for Anthony with an Instagram story.

But what does the Anthony news mean for Mayer’s own chances of landing an extension soon? Now that both Kristian Campbell and Anthony have been offered extensions, Mayer is the last of Boston’s “Big 3” awaiting a similar fate.

Or, perhaps Mayer isn’t focused on an extension at all.

Shortly after the Anthony news broke, Boston Herald’s Mac Cerullo provided the following update on Mayer:

“Marcelo Mayer says he hasn’t had any extension discussions with the team and is focused right now on getting his wrist all healthy. Also says he found out about Anthony’s extension this morning, when he was sitting on the couch watching Narcos and eating a bagel.”

Mayer, 22, suffered a wrist sprain on July 23 and hasn’t played since. Details of the injury’s severity were initially hard to come by, leading fans to begin to panic. On Tuesday, however, Mayer revealed that the ailment is related to his triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), which connects the wrist bones to the forearm bones.

Mayer also said that he expects to return this season. Extension talks will have to wait. Mayer is focused on getting healthy and doing what he does best: playing baseball at a high level.
