Tom Brady concluded his first year in the FOX broadcasting booth by watching Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs lose the Super Bowl. Even in a blowout, the former New England Patriots icon didn’t go overboard criticizing the star quarterback.

After winding down his legendary playing career, Brady began a lucrative deal to work NFL games as a color commentator. His rookie year included a Super Bowl assignment. In search of a three-peat that eluded Brady and the Pats, Mahomes threw two interceptions and got sacked six times in a 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

During an interview with Complex Sports, Brady was told that he seemed “very supportive” and not “threatened” by Mahomes. The seven-time Super Bowl champion explained why he won’t go down the path of overly negative commentary.

“How can I throw shade at someone who’s as amazing as he is?” Brady said. “I know what he’s been through, and I think the one position that I’m in now as a broadcaster, I do feel responsibility. A: To tell the fans what I see and be honest and upfront about everything. But also realize that what these guys are doing on the field is extremely difficult.”

Brady’s expertise could make him particularly critical of anyone who fails to match his lofty standards. However, the 47-year-old said his experience instead gives him more empathy for players bound to make the inevitable blunder.

“You’re looking at any of the 32 teams who have a starting quarterback out there, that guy is one of the best in the world at what he does. So, do they make the right plays all the time? Certainly not. By the way, neither did I. And I think you have to have this context and perspective.”

Brady doesn’t see the need for negativity. It’s also worth noting that his position as a Las Vegas Raiders minority owner can deter him from criticizing other teams, players, and referees.

“To me, it’s more about, let’s point out the greatness of these individual players,” Brady said. “Have fun. Enjoy it. Entertain a little bit, and really try to educate people a little bit. That’s what I want to do on TV.”

Brady will get another chance to watch Mahomes when calling a Super Bowl rematch between the Chiefs and Eagles in Week 2.
