It’s fun to imagine how Boston Celtics icon Larry Bird would fare in today’s NBA.

What’s the modern comparison for Bird? A six-foot-nine Luka Dončić? It’s tough to pinpoint, as Bird was a unique player in the history of the game. Ultimately, his blend of size, skill, intelligence, and competitive fire suggests he’d thrive in today’s game, much like he did in the 1980s.

Looking at Bird’s numbers is a complicated ordeal, since the game was played much differently back then. Bird’s career averages — 24.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game over 13 seasons — hold up, but in today’s game, Bird’s shooting touch would likely translate to higher three-point attempts, boosting his scoring numbers.

Bird’s IQ and court vision would align perfectly with the modern need for versatile forwards who can create and stretch the floor. Picture Bird in a pace-and-space system like the one run by the Indiana Pacers. Firing off screens or getting involved in pick-and-pops, Bird’s offensive game would be lethal.

Bird’s size, strength, and cunning allowed him to overpower smaller foes and outsmart bigger ones, a skillset ideal for today’s positionless, switch-heavy defenses.

While not a leaper, Bird’s craftiness and physicality would help him exploit mismatches.

A notable Celtics fan account, @celticslife, recently defended Bird against modern critics:

“Stop claiming modern players are better than older players using inflated modern stats,” the post read. “If Bird grew up as a kid with a 3pt line & coaches demanded half the shots were 3’s his scoring average & 3pt% would be much higher. Add in private planes & modern training & Bird would kill.”

Indeed, modern training, nutrition, and recovery — like cryotherapy or load management — would likely preserve Bird’s health, countering the back issues that cut his career short. Enhanced travel conditions would keep him fresher through grueling seasons.

Additionally, Bird’s intangibles — his work ethic, clutch mentality and swagger — would translate to any era, including the present.

There’s no reason to believe that Bird wouldn’t be a perennial MVP candidate in the modern NBA.
