New England spent Thursday making the least interesting roster move of the week: signing 34-year-old defensive tackle DaQuan Jones to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. Fine. Whatever. That’s not the move anybody in Foxborough should be losing sleep over.
The real one is buried underneath it. A.J. Brown is gone for at least four games. Not six weeks. Four games, minimum. And Drake Maye’s offense already looked broken without him for a half.
Brown suffered a high-ankle sprain in the third quarter of the season-opening loss to Seattle, went down trying to haul in a low throw from Maye, and didn’t get back up right. Two days later, the Patriots put him on injured reserve. He’s eligible to return Week 6 against the Jets. Translation: Steelers, Jaguars, Bills, and Raiders, in that order, minus the best receiver on the roster.
That’s a brutal stretch to play without your one true weapon.
New England’s play success rate sat at 46.7 percent with Brown on the field in the opener, then dropped to 35.1 percent the moment he limped to the sideline. Maye finished with a career-high three interceptions, and every single one of them came after Brown left the game. That wasn’t bad luck. It was an offense that had exactly one real answer, and that answer just went on injured reserve for a month-plus.
Josh McDaniels is in his fifteenth season running this offense, across three different stints with New England. He still took some of the blame for the opener. “I have to do a better job of limiting Seahawks opportunities,” he said afterward. That’s a scheme answer to a personnel problem. Romeo Doubs and Pop Douglas can absorb some of the target share. Neither of them is walking through that door and becoming what Brown was fifteen minutes into his Patriots career. Pittsburgh’s pass rush is not going to be gentle about finding that out.

Patriots fans are somewhere between furious and morbidly amused about it. A decent chunk of the fanbase is joking that Brown will finally have time to catch up on his reading, a callback to the drama that trailed him out of Philadelphia. Mean? A little. Wrong that it stings way more than just a rough four-game stretch? Not really.
DaQuan Jones is a perfectly good signing for a defensive line that needed a body. He is not why anyone in New England should be nervous about October. That would be the receiver on IR. And the four opponents who just got a lot easier to game plan against.
