Have you noticed something recently during Saturdays at Fenway Park?
After Wilyer Abreu hit a thunderous homer to right field to send the Fenway Faithful into a tizzy….while wearing the yellow City Connect jerseys…..the Red Sox have gone back to basics during their Saturday home games.
July 25 against the Blue Jays? Home whites.
August 8 against the Athletics? Home whites.
You noticing anything going on here?
Could we be in the first phases of a plan the club is taking to step away from those alternates that debuted in 2021? Well, hell if I know, but I do think it’s worth pointing out.
The yellow City Connects have been a recent staple of Saturday home games—and only Saturday home games, now that the Fenway greens have taken over Fridays at Fenway—for a while now; MassLive tells me they started doing this in 2024. The team’s record in the yellows has actually been really good since they dropped, but maybe what we’re seeing is the beginning of the end for the yellows. Hell, the team’s Twitter account’s bio doesn’t even say that they “sometimes wear yellow” anymore!!!! Now it’s just green that they mention!!!!!! This is big news!
Knowing how Nike/Fanatics likes to move, these sets aren’t gonna stay forever. The greens could be relegated to alternates one day and then meet a similar fate that the yellows could ultimately face in the not-so-distant future. New City Connect jerseys have to debut. New merchandise has to be sold. Old aesthetics have to make way for the new ones. It’s how these things go; just ask any NBA fan about what Nike does with their alternate jerseys. Or, better yet: ask any soccer fan about what every supplier does with their alternates and primaries every single season.
That actually brings me to a side point: I like when alternate jerseys are exactly that: alternates. Mix it in every so often, that’s all. Maybe that’s a boomer take of mine, and I’m certainly open to a couple of different sets being in the rotation, but I just love my home whites at Fenway, man. It’s such a clean and classic look. A little variance is nice, but I don’t want things to go overboard.
Anyways, back to the point. I feel like this Saturday’s game against San Francisco might be a true tell-tale sign for the future of the yellow kits. If the Sox come out in the original whites, that’s officially a trend. Two’s a coincidence, after all, so we might be able to read the writing on the wall a bit more clear if the yellows are left in the locker room this weekend. Watch this space.
If 2026 is gonna be it for the yellow City Connects, then I give them a hearty salute. I had some great memories watching the team play in them—that Wilyer homer might just be the definitive yellow jersey moment for me, and I don’t think I’m being a prisoner of the moment when I say that—and I do genuinely like the design (even if some folks online have soured on it, anecdotally speaking). Besides, with the Boston Marathon theme, maybe the league will let the Red Sox skirt the uniform rules and allow the yellows to return during all of marathon weekend before the Boston Strong sets are brought out for Patriots’ Day.
