As it often does, the Massachusetts football season flew by in the blink of an eye. Some things went as expected. Perennial favorites such as Xaverian and Catholic Memorial rose to the pinnacle, each claiming its latest Super Bowl championships. Xaverian even managed to three-peat, a feat accomplished only three times in MIAA history, twice by Xaverian. Al Fornaro was part of both of those stretch runs with the Div. 1 powerhouse, as an assistant from 1994-96, and now as the program’s head coach the past few seasons. Xaverian is just one of the many standouts to emerge, and there…

The Boston Red Sox lost pitching prospect Jedixson Paez to the Chicago White Sox in the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday. Paez signed with the Red Sox in 2021 as an international prospect. His $450,000 siging bonus was the fourth largest of the Red Sox’s 2021 class, and the highest of any pitcher Boston signed during the 2021 international signing period. Paez was the Red Sox’s No. 18 prospect, but they chose not to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. The White Sox selected him with the second pick in the first round of the MLB Phase of the…
The home stretch is about to begin. The Patriots emerge from their bye week with a marquee matchup against Josh Allen and the Bills at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. A win would secure the Patriots their first AFC East title since 2019. A loss would snap the team’s 10-game winning streak and complicate its quest for the No. 1 seed. What’s on your mind entering Sunday’s showdown? Quite a lot, it turns out. Let’s dive into your questions in a post-bye edition of the Mailbag. Editor’s Note: Some questions have been lightly edited for clarity. What is the most concerning weakness…
FOXBORO — Drake Maye knew that Philip Rivers could still sling the rock even before the 44-year-old quarterback made his return to football this week with the Colts. Maye worked out with Rivers before the 2024 NFL Draft. Rivers has been retired since 2020 and made his comeback this week after Colts starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending torn Achilles. “I think it’s awesome. I think it’s pretty cool. When we were down there — I did draft training in Mobile, and he lives around there somewhere — I think the biggest thing is he still throws it good.…

There are only a few weeks left in the NFL regular season, and the NFL MVP race is essentially a two-horse race between New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. Every week, it seems, their odds flip based on who has the better game. While Stafford has the better odds heading into Week 15, there’s still time for Maye to catch him. Leading the Patriots to a big win over the Buffalo Bills this weekend would certainly help his chances. Matt Ryan, who won the 2016 NFL MVP and led the Atlanta Falcons to…
We had some fun with the ridiculousness that is the Winter Meetings rumor mill this morning, but we do in fact have credible reporting that the Red Sox have engaged in trade talks involving at least four former all-stars: Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager, Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes, and Cardinals utility man Brendan Donovan. Of course “talks” could mean anything from “here’s our starting offer” to “hey, you wanna give us Ketel Marte? No? Ok, ttyl,” so you don’t need to much stock into potential trade scenarios now. (Tim Healey, Alex Speier, Boston Globe)In fact,…

By JON GAMBRELL, Associated Press DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Egypt and Iran, two Middle East nations that target gays and lesbians, have complained to FIFA over a World Cup soccer match in Seattle that is planned to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride. Leaders in the nation’s soccer federations publicly rebuked the idea of playing the match June 26 at Seattle Stadium, which local organizers say will include a “once-in-a-lifetime moment to showcase and celebrate LGBTQIA+ communities in Washington.” In Egypt, the soccer federation issued a statement late Tuesday saying it sent a letter to FIFA “categorically rejecting any activities related…
Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow went down swinging in his attempt to sign Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who returned to Philadelphia for five years and $150 million. But Breslow still has a chance to knock the ball out of the park. The Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham reports it’s possible the Red Sox will re-sign third baseman Alex Bregman AND land New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso in free agency. “The Sox are focused on bringing back free agent third baseman Alex Bregman. That’s their priority according to sources in and out of the organization,” Abraham…
