BEVERLY — The Gloucester field hockey team came into the year with lofty ambitions after a strong summer, only to open its schedule with a humbling loss at home. Thursday night, the Fishermen evened the score with Beverly. Sophomore standout Fiona Black was the first of three different scorers for Gloucester (4-1-1), pairing with senior goalie Keagan Jewell’s seven-save shutout, to power a 3-0 Northeastern Conference crossover win over the Panthers (3-3-1). The Fishermen play in the Lynch division, and Beverly plays in the Dunn, so NEC title implications aren’t as much a factor with the win. Bragging rights are,…

With this week being the last we’ll see of several of this year’s minor league mainstays, it’s understandable to hear me say “five scoreless, great final showing” a few times and think it redundant. But this is a team — nay, a farm — stocked with rotation arms who have all raised their stock over the course of the season. Tyler Uberstine, whose stats can be found here and who, like yesterday’s subject, Shane Drohan, is eligible for the Rule 5 draft if not protected, ran into a bit more trouble in some outings, but still earned a promotion this…
MALDEN – Malden secured a 14-12 victory over Greater Boston League rival Somerville under the lights at MacDonald Stadium on Thursday night. This was the first time the Tornadoes had defeated Somerville since the 2023 season. It was also their first win of 2025 after falling to Lynn Classical in its first game. Malden head coach Witche Exilhomme said his team’s familiarity with the Highlanders made preparing for the game easier. “We do a lot of work with Somerville; they know us very well, we know them very well,” Exhilhomme said. “We expected this, we planned a lot for it.”…
The beautiful unpredictability of pro sports means that even when we’re positive that a certain young player is going to be a star, we never quite know when it’s going to happen, nor how high that star’s ceiling will ultimately reach. This is a scenario the Boston Red Sox have experienced vividly in 2025. Boston’s trio of All-Stars deserve a boatload of credit for the team’s success this season. Garrett Crochet has been exactly the ace he was brought in to be. Alex Bregman, though currently ice cold, has had a good year overall and has impacted Boston’s clubhouse in…

As recently as Sept. 2 the Red Sox playoff odds stood as high as 98.2%. At that point the club was six games above the playoff cutline and had just polished off an 11-7 win at Fenway Park over the Cleveland Guardians, who were a game below .500 and by all accounts were out of the hunt. How quickly things can change. Since that night the Red Sox have gone 5-8 in their last 13 games while the Guardians have ripped off an incredible 13-2 run, vaulting themselves right back into the conversation. In the process the Guardians have leapfrogged…

Jayson Tatum is likely to miss most or all of the Boston Celtics season due to a torn Achilles, but there is some hope that he could return before the playoffs begin next April. If Tautm is going to return to action within the year, he’ll need to ensure he doesn’t have any setbacks while rehabbing, and so far, he is off to a good start. During 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak & Bertrand,” Marc Bertrand shared exciting news on Tatum’s rehab. “The Celtics are very happy with how hard Jayson Tatum has been working at his rehab and his…
Jayson Tatum is still a long way from returning to action for the Boston Celtics. But he seems hell-bent on making his absence as short as possible. Tatum underwent surgery mere hours after rupturing his Achilles tendon on May 12 in the Celtics’ second-round playoff series with the New York Knicks. By early July, he was doing pool workouts. By August, he was out of his walking boot. And what appears to be aiding his recovery is essentially treating it like a full time job. Marc Bertrand and Scott Zolak, the co-hosts of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak & Bertrand…
