New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has stuck by running back Rhamondre Stevenson all season, despite some inconsistent play and fumbling issues. Vrabel’s faith was rewarded in Week 7 as Stevenson broke out for a season-high 88 rushing yards and one touchdown in the team’s win against the Tennessee Titans. Second-round rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson was barely used in the contest, meanwhile, collecting five yards on two carries while playing just nine snaps. While Stevenson’s performance was a key part of New England’s 31-13 victory vs. Tennessee, there was one play from the contest that drew the ire…

Pandora’s box has been opened, and Jaylen Brown doesn’t like what’s inside. The Boston Celtics forward, who also is a vice president of the NBA Players Association, fielded multiple questions Friday about the FBI’s announcement Thursday that three prominent NBA figures — Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former player Damon Jones — had been arrested as part of two separate investigations into insider sports betting and rigged poker games involving Mafia members. While Brown admitted he’s “not completely sure what’s going on” with the current scandal, he was adamant that NBA players need more…
Losers of their last six games and looking nothing like the team that was hoped for and promised, the Bruins went back to the in-season version of a two-a-day on Friday at Warrior Ice Arena. No, coach Marco Sturm did not reach back for a 20th century bag skate to cure the team’s ills. Those are mostly a thing of the past as a “teaching” tool. But rather he and his staff first ran his players through an extensive off-ice session to hammer home some of the finer points of his zone/man hybrid defensive system that, at the moment, his…
By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The stunning indictment that led to the arrest of more than 30 people, including Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and other NBA figures, on charges of illegal sports betting has drawn new scrutiny of the booming business of professional sports gambling across the U.S. Since widespread legalization, the multibillion-dollar industry has made it easy to place wagers on everything from the outcome of games to that of a single play with just a few taps of a cellphone. It’s just about impossible to go to a basketball, football, baseball or other…
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is one of the biggest stories in the NFL entering Week 8. With his torrid six-game stretch of performances with at least 200 passing yards and a plus-100 passer rating while being under 24 years old, Maye has joined some exclusive company. The second-year pro is not only making Patriots history, but has officially entered the MVP conversation near the midway point of the season as well. Patriots beat writer Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald highlighted what he called the most “absurd” stat for Maye through seven weeks on Friday. Maye has a…
Cooperstown, New York is a wonderful little town. Look at this place! Give me this lake, a small sailboat, some beer and I’d gladly spend the whole summer there. But Cooperstown, New York has absolutely nothing — NOTHING — to do with the history of baseball. You know what does have something to do with the history of baseball? The campus of Northeastern University, which hosted the first World Series game ever played at the late Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds. It has never ceased to amaze me that, in a city packed with tourists leading bored kids from one historic site to another,…
FOXBORO — Since returning to game action in Week 4, Christian Gonzalez’s play has matched his personality. Quiet. Gonzalez has made 19 tackles and just one pass breakup, albeit an important one on third down that forced the Bills to kick a field goal late in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ biggest win of the season. Since then, Gonzalez failed to get his hands on the ball and allowed a few catches in man-to-man coverage. But his position coach, Justin Hamilton, believes he’ll turn the corner soon. “It, to me, feels like he’s starting to settle into having his…

Hollins has not been as productive as fellow starters Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte, but his leadership and blocking ability have undoubtedly helped the offense. Hollins is one of the more unique players in the NFL. He walks around barefoot, believes house cats steal your soul and posts educational videos on social media about home maintenance, automobile service and world history. Learn more about Hollins in this week’s New Patriots installment. Q: What’s your first football memory? I watched Barry Sanders highlights back in…
