FOXBORO — Josh McDaniels had scruff. A lot of it, in fact, as he walked to a podium Thursday morning inside the Patriots’ facility. The image cut against most you’ll find of McDaniels from his previous stops in New England, spanning 2001-08 and 2012-21. Those pictures reflect a coach with a tight haircut, clean-shaven face and eyes laser focused. This McDaniels, however, was relaxed. Reflective. Smiling. Days ahead of a season opener where Patriots players and coaches have admitted they don’t know what to expect from the Raiders, it’s easy to say the same of McDaniels this year. Over the…

Boston Red Sox starter Payton Tolle’s second start wasn’t quite as stellar as his first. He surrendered five runs over three innings while striking out just two batters in a 10-5 loss. The Arizona Diamondbacks are one of the best teams in baseball at hitting left-handed pitching. The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the worst, making Friday’s start a huge step up in competition. Nobody enters the big leagues without growing pains, even the best of the best. Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman started his major league career 1-36 before going on a tear. Dustin Pedroia hit .191 over…

The Patriots made legitimate improvements along their defensive line this offseason when they signed defensive tackle Milton Williams to pair with Christian Barmore. And it might not be long before the tandem proves worthy of such investment with the Raiders traveling to Gillette Stadium on Sunday. According to Pro Football Focus, the Las Vegas grouping ranks 18th out of 32 teams entering the season. David Andrews, the former Patriots center and current co-host of The Quick Snap Podcast, believes it could mean a big day for New England’s defensive front. Specifically, Patriots outside linebacker Harold Landry III, who could be…

By BETH HARRIS Justin Herbert finished off the Los Angeles Chargers’ season-opening victory in style, sliding for a first down that effectively ended the game. The quarterback earned style points for his scramble and sideline slide that capped a 318-yard, three-touchdown performance in a 27-21 victory over the Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night in Sao Paulo. Herbert had 32 yards rushing, too. Los Angeles’ first win over the Chiefs since Sept. 26, 2021, snapped a seven-game skid against the team that has dominated the AFC for nearly a decade. “It’s monumental,” Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh…

It took eight innings for the Red Sox offense to show signs of life, and about five minutes for Diamondbacks to stamp out every rally spark and force Alex Cora to wait at least one more day for his 600th managerial victory. Bookended by Payton Tolle’s five-run start and Justin Slaten’s four-run implosion, Friday night marked Boston’s second frustratingly unforgettable loss in a row, a 10-5 mess in Arizona. Even though the Red Sox had Thursday off after Wednesday’s unpleasant bullpen loss at Fenway the night before, Tolle’s short start was suboptimal. The lefty prospect lasted just three innings in…

Payton Tolle’s second career Major League outing wasn’t as exciting as his first. The Boston Red Sox starter pitched three innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks and allowed five runs in the process. He struck out two while walking four. He took his first career loss as Arizona won 10-5. There were a few issues for Tolle on Friday. First pitch strikes were one of them. The lefty faced 17 hitters and fell behind nine of them 1-0. That’s a stark contrast from his debut, in which he threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of 21 batters. That issue surfaced because the…

Happy Payton Tolle Day, folks. Last time out, Tolle had the pleasure of facing the hapless Pirates, who are notoriously bad against left-handed pitching. Tonight, he gets an opponent on the other end of the spectrum in the Arizona Diamondbacks, who excel against southpaws. Fortunately, it isn’t Paul Skenes on the mound opposite him; it’s old friend Eduardo Rodriguez. Eddy is in the middle of a difficult season with a 5.40 ERA in 24 starts. He’ll give the Dbacks five innings and hand it off to the bullpen, most likely. Fortunately, the Arizona bullpen isn’t very strong. On the season,…

BRAINTREE – In a game that featured just four pass attempts, Weymouth controlled the tempo with 427 yards on the ground and not a single pass attempt to secure a 42-0 victory over rival Braintree. This ended a five-game losing streak dating back to last season for the Wildcats. Head coach Mike Donovan credited a great effort in practice. “The kids had a great week of practice,” Donovan said about taking down Braintree. “They worked really hard all week. We know it’s never easy coming here. … It’s always an emotional game on both sides. I’m so proud of our…
