BOSTON (AP) — Roman Anthony lined a fly ball over drawn-in center fielder Chas McCormick’s head to score the automatic runner from third, and the Boston Red Sox rallied in the 10th inning to beat the new-look Houston Astros 2-1 on Friday night.Boston trailed 1-0 on Christian Walker’s second-inning home run before tying it in the seventh on Wilyer Abreu’s sacrifice fly. With Abreu starting the bottom of the 10th on second base, Ceddanne Rafaela tried unsuccessfully to bunt him to third before swinging away — and hitting the ball just a few feet in front of the plate. Cooper Criswell has had a hard time climbing the Boston Red Sox depth chart this season. Richard Fitts, Hunter Dobbins and even Sean Newcomb all jumped the righty for opportunities at the big league level this season. Last season, Criswell was effective. In 26 games, he posted a 4.08 ERA. While the number doesn’t jump off the page, it’s good enough for a spot starter trying to give the team a chance to win. Criswell doesn’t have electric stuff. He tops out in the low 90s with his sinker and gets outs by living on the edges of the strike…

FOXBORO — If the Patriots are looking to boost their roster in a major way before the season begins, two top-tier candidates requested trades late this week. Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin and Cowboys edge defender Micah Parsons both want out due to contract quarrels. Head coach Mike Vrabel was asked Friday if the Patriots would be interested if the Commanders or Cowboys honored their requests. Vrabel said he wouldn’t discuss players on other teams. “Let’s focus on the ones that are here that we’re working with,” Vrabel said. “We see all these things happen in the National Football League,…
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the winning run at second, Wilyer Abreu sent a liner down the right field line off All-Star closer Josh Hader to an area of the park with maybe six inches of foul territory. It wasn’t going to make the stands, so all the Red Sox needed was for it to land fair and they’d walk off as winners. Somehow, the ball landed foul. These are the types of moments that can make or break a team, the little setbacks that can cause a club to crack. And while Abreu ultimately…
The trade deadline has come and gone, and the Boston Red Sox performance has been widely panned. The team brought in two pitchers: Steven Matz and Dustin May. While it’s fair to criticize the relative lack of activity, given the quantity of trades that went down on Thursday afternoon, there are still 52 games to be played, and the team currently holds a playoff position. Steven Matz will slide into the bullpen. He’s previously pitched as a starter, but Craig Breslow downplayed the possibility of using the lefty in that role. Dustin May has worked almost exclusively as a starter…
A basketball scout has provided an encouraging update on Jayson Tatum’s recovery from a ruptured Achilles. Heavy.com’s Steve Bulpett reported on Thursday that he heard from a scout who saw Tatum partake as an instructor in the Elite Camp, a basketball camp featuring top college and high school prospects, in Las Vegas this week. And the scout came away impressed with how the Boston Celtics star was moving around the gym without a walking boot, according to Bulpett. “He was moving really well,” the scout told Bulpett. “There might have been a slight limp or something, but the surprising thing…
FOXBORO — Drake Maye took the field with less than two minutes left in need of a touchdown. He opened with two short completions to Rhamondre Stevenson. First down. Then Maye barked signals and hurried the offense back to the line, as the defense showed blitz. He called for the snap, cocked his arm and fired left. Interception. Ballgame. Thank goodness it was August. Maye tossed two interceptions over the Patriots’ ninth training camp practice Friday, the team’s annual in-stadium, intrasquad scrimmage before season-ticket holders. Maye’s Blue team took a 47-38 loss to the White team headlined by backup quarterback…
When the dust settled after Thursday night’s trade deadline, the Red Sox stood with two new pitchers but no major impact additions, a haul that largely fell short of expectations. Yet speaking to reporters Friday afternoon, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he believes the team did enough to compete down the stretch. “I think we got better and I think this team is a lot different than the last three,” Cora said. “We’re more complete, we pitch better, our bullpen is in a great place. I’m very happy with where we’re at.” Cora offered praise for the club’s new…
For a brief moment during the minutes leading up to Thursday’s MLB trade deadline buzzer, it appeared as though everybody atop the Red Sox organization had done their jobs. Craig Breslow had landed a bonafide No. 2 starter, John Henry was willing to pay for that starter, and the major news outlets were beginning to report the blockbuster one by one. First, it was Fox Sport MLB: Then moments later, it was Yahoo Sports: And finally, Spotrac joined in: But as is increasingly the case in our hollow, vapid world, it all turned out to be fake. All of these…
