Welcome to cutdown day! By 4 p.m. Tuesday, every NFL team must trim its roster down to 53 players. Last week, the Patriots got a head start. On Friday, they released 14 players — mostly roster long shots — and then waived young offensive guard Layden Robinson on Sunday with an injury designation. Entering Tuesday, the Pats have 23 spots left to clear either via release, trade or placement on injured reserve. Candidates for IR include wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Efton Chism III and linebacker Jahlani Tavai. For a second straight year, teams can place up to two players…

FOXBORO – Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has a potential solution to calm himself down when he’s feeling too “amped” to begin a game. Maye explained away an inaccurate pass in Week 2 of the preseason, when he threw high to wide receiver DeMario Douglas, as saying he was “a little amped early in the game.” The throw ricocheted off Douglas’ hands and into the arms of a defender, who dropped the ball. Maye also fumbled in the Patriots’ first preseason game. The young quarterback had the same explanation after throwing an interception in the second drive of his first career…

Fresh off a probably overdue (but sad) loss to the Yankees, the Sox trundled down I-95 to face the Orioles. They won, 4-3, in a tight game that was pretty much held down by the bullpen start, with one notable exception. The boys came through on offense, which is the best part. Roman Anthony introduced himself to Camden Yards the same way he entered Yankee Stadium last Thursday: with a big bang. For the second series opener in a row, the Red Sox rookie homered in his first career game at a division rival’s ballpark. Almost as if to say, ‘Get used to it. You’ll be seeing a lot of me for a very long time.’ And for the second series opener in a row, Anthony’s homer changed the game. Despite a relentless Orioles lineup and an injury-related exit for Richard Fitts, the Red Sox cobbled together a crucial 4-3 win. In…

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe was removed from the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.
