The Red Sox really could have used a victory on Wednesday. Boston was not only on the precipice of completing a series sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, but could have brought itself back to .500 on the season before beginning a six-game stretch with the lowly Washington Nationals and Colorado Rockies. Can you guess what happened next? Greg Weissert gave up a go-ahead grand slam, Romy Gonzalez ran into an out on the bases (and likely would have scored the game-tying run if he hadn’t), Trevor Story and Abraham Toro committed errors that allowed the visitors to extend their lead…

Joe Mazzulla’s fourth season as Boston Celtics head coach will be his most challenging yet. The Celtics parted ways with key contributors Jrue Holiday (trade), Kristaps Porzingis (trade), and Luke Kornet (free agency) this offseason as they shed salary to get under the second apron of the luxury tax. Veteran big man Al Horford could be next to leave in free agency, and superstar Jayson Tatum will miss most if not all of the 2025-26 campaign recovering from a ruptured Achilles. That leaves Jaylen Brown and Derrick White as the top two options on an otherwise underwhelming Celtics roster. Boston…

It’s a not-so-fleeting thought dedicated golfers have – at least this one does – when watching the world’s top pros. If only I had those resources – a team that studied everything about my swing, my unique body, my mindset and my innate skills – I bet I could be pretty great. Or at least better. But who among us has access to that kind of coaching? To not just good golf lessons, but to a program that builds up every part of your game from holistic to hard-core technique? Here’s the twist: Thanks to a newly minted golf learning…

The Boston Bruins are seemingly in agreement as to what they’d like their identity to be… Bruins general manager Don Sweeney calling one of his free agent additions a “pain in the (expletive)” should have tipped you off, but if it hadn’t, just listen to the words of one of his other additions. “The group on this team is still so talented, so good, and bringing in some guys yesterday, we’re going to be a really hard team to play against,” Tanner Jeannot said on Wednesday, as transcribed by MassLive’s Chris Mason. “That’s the type of team that, if you…

Well, how gross did that become, huh? The game got away from the Sox fast. It WAS good vibes at first! We were up 3-0! Wilyer was staying on fire! The bullpen was doing great! And then defensive errors on top of a regressing Greg Weissert (Get it? ReGregssion?) and a not-good-(tonight) Jordan Hicks (Get it??? Hicksups???) doomed the game completely. At least we did get the series win, but man, when the Red Sox this season aren’t good, they are bad. Three Studs: Wilyer Abreu: No doubt the series MVP, he smoked a ball to right field, his preferred…

In a National Hockey League that is more and more focused on high-end skill, the Bruins are short on it. No, they’re not totally bereft of skill, not when they have a player like David Pastrnak on their top line. But there are holes in the lineup once you get past that top line. And with only so much money on hand and only so many skilled players available on the free agent market, it’s clear that focus was on adding more baseline, old–school competitiveness in mind. Just how many games the Bruins win next season remains to be seen.…

The Red Sox had a plan all mapped out, but there wasn’t much room for error. Brayan Bello would pitch most, if not all, of the suspended game on Wednesday afternoon, with Aroldis Chapman available to close things out if necessary. Then, with the bullpen fully rested and an off-day coming Thursday, the rest of the staff would piece together the nightcap. Everyone had a job to do, but if anyone dropped the baton things could get ugly in a hurry. Boston nearly made it to the finish, but the bullpen couldn’t get the series sweep over the line. After…
