The Red Sox are pulling out all the stops as they kick off their final home stand before the All-Star break. Boston will deploy their southpaw specialists against yet another left-hander in Monday’s series opener with the visiting Colorado Rockies. In part due to players like Rob Refsnyder and Romy Gonzalez, the Red Sox have stronger collected splits against lefty starters this year. Though the southpaw sample size is significantly smaller, there’s a noteworthy gap; in 1,002 team plate appearances against lefty starters, the offense is slashing .276/.345/.474. In 2,518 PA against righty starters, they’re managing a .245/.316/.407 line. Four…

The Red Sox are expected to activate Masataka Yoshida this week for his long-awaited season debut. “Most likely Wednesday,” manager Alex Cora said Monday afternoon. Yoshida’s activation will mark his season debut after months of rehabbing following offseason shoulder surgery last fall. The 31-year-old left-fielder and designated hitter is in the third of a five-year, $90 million contract. Over 248 games between his first two Sox seasons, he hit .285 with a .775 OPS. Alex Bregman may not be far behind. The veteran third baseman is making a rapid recovery from the quad strain he suffered on May 23. So…

The Boston Celtics agreed to trade Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in a deal finalized Monday. The trade, however, did include a twist from the previously reported agreement, which initially surfaced June 23 but could not become official until July 6. And it did not benefit the Celtics. The Trail Blazers did not have to trade two of their second-round picks to the Celtics. It was instead reduced to a player-for-player swap with Anfernee Simons landing in Boston and Holiday headed to Portland. According to a report from The Oregonian’s Aaron Fentress on Monday, the altered package was…

There’s plenty of optimism surrounding the New England Patriots right now, and much of it is warranted after the team overhauled its coaching staff, spent a ton of money in free agency and put together a 2025 draft class that earned rave reviews. But should fans really expect the Patriots to reach the playoffs during the upcoming NFL season? The NFL playoffs have had at least four “new” teams (that missed the postseason the previous year) in every season since 1990, per USA TODAY Sports’ Nate Davis. Last season, there were four new playoff teams: the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver…

The Red Sox are now winners of five of six and comfortably above .500 (well, not very comfortably, but, alas…) but most of the AL is not laying down (how dare they!) Still, are the recent wins and an upcoming series against Colorado having us Red Sox faithful thinking Breslow might buy at the deadline? I’m not convinced, personally, and I think they’ll be doing a little of both, as has been the mantra for four years running, spanning two CBOs. But, if they were buyers, there’s certainly no shortage of names who are ready for the next level who…

A quick look at the New England Patriots’ 2025 regular-season schedule reveals three games in prime time: Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills (Sunday Night Football), Week 11 against the New York Jets (Prime Video Thursday Night) and Week 13 vs. the New York Giants (Monday Night Football). In addition, the Patriots’ Week 6 game in New Orleans has a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff. The Week 18 game against the Miami Dolphins is TBD. That leaves 12 games with 1 p.m. ET start times this year. Which makes sense, given the Patriots’ performance the last two seasons. But at least…

In the social media age, grief is often shared in real time. Sometimes that opens the door for tension — and that is exactly what happened after ESPN tweeted about the death of Bobby Jenks. Jenks, the hard-throwing closer who helped the Chicago White Sox win the 2005 World Series, died Friday at 44 following a battle with stomach cancer. While much of the baseball world expressed shock and sadness over the loss, former teammate Doug Mientkiewicz took exception to how ESPN framed the news. ESPN should be ashamed and embarrassed for writing something like this! “Was on the roster”?…
