Nearly 28 years to the day after being drafted first overall by the Boston Bruins, Joe Thornton has been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Thornton was one of eight people elected to the Hall of Fame on Tuesday, getting in on his first ballot appearance. He will be inducted on Nov. 10 in Toronto alongside fellow Bruins legend Zdeno Chára. Boston took Thornton with the No. 1 pick in the 1997 NHL entry draft, 11 days before his 18th birthday. The London, Ontario native debuted with the Bruins that fall and soon emerged as one of their best…

The New England Patriots bolstered their offensive line depth by bringing back a familiar face. On Tuesday, the Patriots announced they signed offensive tackle Yasir Durant. Durant played in seven games for New England during the 2021 NFL season with one start at right tackle. Terms of Durant’s contract weren’t disclosed, but Mark Daniels of MassLive.com reported it’s a one-year deal for the former Missouri standout. Durant, 27, entered the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2020. The Chiefs traded the 6-foot-6, 330-pounder to the Patriots in 2021. In 2022, the New Orleans Saints…

The Boston Celtics’ reign as defending NBA champions is officially over. The Oklahoma City Thunder dethroned the Celtics with their 103-91 Game 7 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, capping a historically dominant season with their first championship since relocating from Seattle in 2008. The Thunder set numerous records during their title run en route to becoming the seventh different team in the last seven years to win it all — an NBA record. The previous record of six consecutive seasons occurred from 1975 to 1980 — a stretch that also included Boston (1976). The current streak highlights the…
It’s only been a couple of weeks, but I’m ready to make it official: with Alex Bregman on the shelf and Rafael Devers having traded chowder for cioppino, Roman Anthony is currently the best hitter on the Red Sox. The surface-level results aren’t there yet — not even close. But there’s a saying that one should never scout the stat line, and that saying appears to have been coined with Anthony in mind. It was 2023 when Anthony first blew up on the prospect scene like a Roman candle (Ed. Note: Ha ha!). But if you merely looked at the…

The first domino of the Celtics’ offseason roster renovation fell late Monday night. Boston traded guard Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for guard Anfernee Simons and two second-round draft picks, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania. Holiday, who turned 35 earlier this month and has three years and more than $100 million remaining on his contract, was viewed as one of the Celtics’ most logical offseason trade candidates. His arrival in 2023 (from Portland, which had acquired him from Milwaukee days earlier) was a vital step in Boston’s path to the NBA championship last season. In…

Tuesday night the 2025 Red Sox season officially reaches its midway point. The Herald’s Red Sox beat writers, Mac Cerullo and Gabrielle Starr, discuss how things have played out and what we can expect in the months ahead. Preseason predictions: Fair or foul? Gabrielle Starr: Before Opening Day, we both felt more optimistic than we had in over half a decade. I said the Alex Bregman signing “really moved the needle,” and it certainly has been a game-changer in more ways than one. However, my biggest takeaway from the offseason and spring training was the Red Sox “being perceived like…
