Brad Stevens has done a phenomenal job through his first four seasons as the Boston Celtics’ president of basketball operations. This offseason, however, will be his most challenging yet. Stevens’ primary goal this summer will be getting under the second apron of the luxury tax while maintaining a roster that can compete for a title. The Celtics must shed roughly $20 million in salary to accomplish that task, which means they’ll have to part ways with at least one rotation player from their 2024 championship core. Moves might be made before or during the upcoming NBA Draft, during which the…
When the Red Sox won eight out of nine games to climb back into the playoff picture this month, they did so on the strength of their pitching. For about two weeks the starters went deep into games, the bullpen held onto leads, and everyone did their job. But late Monday in Anaheim, the Red Sox could hardly find the plate. The Red Sox pitching staff had a tough night in Monday’s 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, collectively walking a season-worst 11 batters en route the club’s third straight defeat. Walker Buehler endured a horrible first inning and finished…
The Boston Celtics’ gap year is officially underway. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Celtics agreed to trade guard Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trailblazers in exchange for guard Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks. The Celtics will shed some salary with the move. Holiday signed a four-year, $134 million contract with Boston before winning the NBA finals in 2024. Holiday was a key piece of the Celtics’ championship run. He missed time early in the playoffs, but averaged 9.5 points per game when he was available. He also routinely drew difficult defensive assignments. Simons is 26 years…
DAVE MASON/THE STAR / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images We got some momentum. Let’s keep it going. Sure, the Red Sox lost yesterday but broadly things have been pretty good recently even accounting for, ya know, The Trade. So let’s hope tonight’s 9:38 (sure) game goes well. Life comes full circle for the Walpole baseball program. Ninety-one years after the artists formerly known as the Rebels won the inaugural state baseball tournament, the Timberwolves capped a wild journey by knocking off Reading 7-6 to win the Division 2 state title. Even nicer was the postgame gesture by Walpole coach Chris Costello to give the championship award to interim AD Bill Tompkins, who won more than 500 games as head coach at the school. The Bay State Conference nearly had two titles in the same year as Braintree overcame a host of injuries to get to the Div.…
With the NHL draft and free agency looming the next 10 days or so, the Bruins took care of a necessary piece of business on Monday. The club announced they signed defenseman Mason Lohrei to a two-year extension worth an annual cap hit of $3.2 million. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Lohrei was scheduled to become a restricted free agent on July 1. He will still be an RFA when the deal is up. The deal allows the player time to continue to grow his game and it also gives the Bruins a couple of years to assess what exactly they have…
The San Francisco Giants tied up some finances with their blockbuster trade for Rafael Devers last week. So much so that the Richmond Flying Squirrels are feeling it all the way in Double-A — or at least that’s what they’re joking. “We cannot give you a ball,” a sign in Richmond’s dugout read last week, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Colin Beazley. “We just traded for Devers and he costs a lot of $. Foul balls, yes, we can hook you up.” The Giants’ Double-A affiliate is playing this week here in Altoona. The @GoSquirrels bullpen taped up a sign to…
