Christian Gonzalez doesn’t want ‘obsolete’ contract with Patriots – NBC Boston

For most of the summer, the Christian Gonzalez contract situation appeared to have been operating as smoothly as possible. This week, it might have hit a speed bump.

After participating in training camp for all 13 on-field practices, Gonzalez was conspicuously absent on Day 14, when the Patriots welcomed another team — the Colts — onto their practice field. Whether that absence was due to a minor injury suffered late in the prior day’s practice or whether it was a sign that Gonzalez is unwilling to risk injury while competing against non-Patriots has not been made clear.

Regardless, the absence represented the first potential hitch in the team and the player working through active negotiations.

Patriots insider Tom E. Curran shared a bit of insight on what Gonzalez is looking for in a new contract, which might help explain the complications at play.

“The endgame is very simple. In my estimation, what my understanding is, Christian Gonzalez does not want his contract to be obsolete within seven months,” Curran said on Arbella Early Edition. “When the new league year comes and the salary cap goes from $301 [million] to $330 million, the first corner who comes up under that new cap is going to sign for $34 [million], $35 [million]. So what Christian Gonzalez would like is not to be treated as if he’s at the table in 2026, but be treated as if he’s at the table in 2027.”

Curran added: “And he’d prefer for his contract to not be obsolete in 2028, either.”

Currently, Cleveland’s Denzel Ward is the highest-paid cornerback in terms of annual salary, at $31.1 million per year. That’s just $100,000 more than the Rams’ Trent McDuffie, who’s making $900,000 more than Indy’s Sauce Gardner. When Gardner was with the Jets, he started the minor one-upping trend, as he got $100,000 more per year than Derek Stingley.

Gonzalez likely isn’t looking to simply leapfrog Ward, only to be passed several times in the next two years. Patrick Surtain would be a good case study. Widely considered the best corner in football, Surtain signed a record-setting contract in 2024 that made him the highest-paid cornerback in the league. Now less than two years later, he’s the seventh-highest-paid corner in the NFL.

Curran indicated the Patriots have to consider that working such a deal would set a precedent, and with quarterback Drake Maye becoming eligible for an extension next year, that kind of contract could really get extreme.

“So,” Curran concluded, “we can get into what Robert Kraft did and Christian Gonzalez is doing on social media, but the essence of the argument is — should Christian Gonzalez be paid like he’s a free agent in 2027 right now?”
