NHL superstar Connor McDavid inked a two-year, $25 million contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers on Monday.
The three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner contract’s average annual value (AAV) pales in comparison to some other sport’s athletes, including a pair of former Boston Red Sox players.
“Your regular reminder about how NHL salaries stack up against other sports 🤯,” The Athletic posted on Bluesky.
Among the handful of notable names on the list shared by The Athletic are former Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi ($15 million AAV) and ex-Boston starting pitcher Nick Pivetta ($13.75 million AAV).

Benintendi is in his third season with the Chicago White Sox after spending two-plus years with the Kansas City Royals and half of the 2022 campaign with the New York Yankees. “Benny” started his MLB career with the Red Sox from 2016 to 2020, finishing as the 2017 AL Rookie of the Year runner-up and helping the team win the 2018 World Series.
Pivetta suited up for Boston for four-plus seasons from 2020 to 2024, signed a four-year, $55 million deal with the San Diego Padres in February and had a breakout 2025 campaign.
Seeing NHL stars’ salaries fail to match up with standouts in the other major sports leagues is nothing new, but still surprising to see when a legend like McDavid signs a contract.
