Boston Red Sox left-handed ace Garrett Crochet will make his last start before the All-Star break when he takes the mound against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. With his team amid an eight-game winning streak, Crochet will be looking for his 10th win of the season in Game 3 of an important series against their American League East rivals.

Recently named to his second All-Star team, Crochet announced that he’s decided to err on the side of caution and not pitch in the Midsummer Classic, and rest his arm before the Red Sox begin a tough stretch of games against three of the top teams in the National League when the team returns to action from the All-Star break.

While Crochet won’t be suiting up to pitch in the All-Star game next week, Chris Cotillo from Mass Live revealed the southpaw has intentions to pitch for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic next March.

“I haven’t heard anything,” said Crochet, per Cotillo. “I don’t know how it works or when people reach out. Obviously, it would be a huge honor. I’d hope the organization would view it as an honor as well. If I was asked, I’d definitely enjoy participating and I’d love to participate. But right now, my focus is on continuing to build on the season I’ve had.”

Crochet’s interest in participating in the World Baseball Classic mirrors recent comments from teammate Marcelo Mayer, who, according to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, would like to play for Team Mexico in next year’s competition.
