Two of the winningest franchises in NFL history will face off in Week 9.
The defending AFC champion New England Patriots (5-3) will host the Green Bay Packers (5-3) in a rare rematch of Super Bowl XXXI.
The Packers won that game nearly 30 years ago, but the Patriots have done more winning since then. New England has added six Super Bowl victories and 10 AFC titles since that loss, while Green Bay has just one Super Bowl and two NFC titles in the same span.
In their head-to-head matchups, the Patriots and Packers have played an even series over the last 30 years — three wins for each side. Green Bay hasn’t visited Gillette Stadium since 2018, when Tom Brady led two fourth-quarter touchdown drives to defeat Aaron Rodgers. The teams’ last meeting at Lambeau Field in 2022 featured Bailey Zappe and Brian Hoyer at quarterback for the Patriots and Rodgers for the Packers (in an overtime loss for New England), so this year’s game will look completely new.
The Patriots improved to 5-3 with their Week 8 road win in Miami over the Dolphins. It wasn’t easy, but Drake Maye turned it on in the second half to seal the 24-19 victory. New England trailed at 13-3 halftime as injuries continued to stack up. Maye came out of the locker room on fire, though, totaling three touchdowns in an impressive performance.
The Packers also won in Week 8 to get to 5-3 on the season. They’ve had some extra time to rest after playing on Thursday Night Football, where Jordan Love led his team to a 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Green Bay has won four of its last five games after a 1-2 start (as have the Patriots), putting them right in the mix to win the highly-competitive NFC North.
So, will New England maintain its perfect home record? Or will Green Bay win its first game in Foxboro since 2002? Here’s what to know for Packers-Patriots:
