Jayson Tatum Sat Out for the Earliest Rest Day of His Career, and the Celtics Beat Milwaukee Anyway

Jayson Tatum has never sat out this early in a season he was healthy for. His MVP campaigns didn’t require it, and neither did any of Boston’s prior minutes-management seasons under Brad Stevens or Joe Mazzulla. The only time he’s missed a game sooner than Tuesday night was with a torn Achilles. So when the Celtics listed him as a rest-day scratch six games into November, against a Bucks team with a losing record, it read less like routine maintenance and more like a decision somebody was going to have to answer for.

Mazzulla’s answer, delivered before tip, barely engaged the question. “We’ll play a bunch of different lineups. What doesn’t change is the process of how we have to execute on both ends of the floor,” he said. That’s the kind of quote a coach gives when the real answer is “I trust the guys we built this roster to survive without him.”

Boston trusted them for about a half.

The Celtics opened a 22-point lead by halftime against Milwaukee, a team that came in 1-6 and tied for the worst record in the league. Then the Bucks, with nothing left to lose, clawed the whole thing back and briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter.

For a few possessions, a Celtics team missing its best player looked like it was about to hand a bottom-feeder its signature win of the season.

Rough few minutes to be a Celtics fan with the remote in hand.

It didn’t happen. Paul George scored 25 points and made 5 of 9 threes, exactly the fourth-quarter shot-making that makes a front office feel good about an offseason bet. Derrick White matched him with 24 points, seven assists and two blocks, doing the two-way work Boston has needed someone other than Tatum to provide. Neemias Queta cleaned up inside: 9 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks. Off the bench, Baylor Scheierman grabbed 11 boards and hit 3 of 4 threes, finishing plus-11 in 28 minutes. Payton Pritchard, who entered the night questionable with a shoulder contusion, played through it anyway: 10 points, five assists.

That the answer came from a rookie six games into his career, closing out a game nobody would have trusted him with in October, says plenty about how fast Scheierman earned that trust.

Boston walked away with a 109-102 win, improving to 6-2 on the season and 5-0 at home. Chris Haynes confirmed Boston would rest Tatum hours before tip, so Milwaukee knew exactly who it wasn’t getting and still nearly got there anyway.

That matters more than the box score lets on. Boston has real depth now, the kind that can build a 22-point lead and still need its two best remaining players to go get it back with the game on the line. A 1-6 team pushed the Celtics to the final three minutes without the guy who leads them in minutes, shots and attention. Pass that test enough times against teams that are actually good, and Mazzulla has a problem no coach minds carrying: a locker room that believes it doesn’t need the superstar to win.

Fail it once against a team that isn’t 1-6, and this rest day gets remembered as the night Boston learned exactly how thin that margin really is.
