Former Boston Red Sox manager Joe Morgan has died at the age of 95, the team announced Sunday.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Red Sox Hall of Famer and former manager Joe Morgan,” the Red Sox said in a social media post. “He was a truly beloved fixture of the Red Sox, spending nearly two decades with the organization. We send our love to the Morgan family.”
Morgan was a native of Walpole, Massachusetts, and played baseball and hockey at Boston College before going on to play parts of four Major League Baseball seasons, totaling 88 games. He managed the Pawtucket Red Sox for 13 years.
In 1988, while serving as the Boston Red Sox third base coach, he was named acting manager at mid season after the team fired manager John McNamara. Morgan led the Sox to 12 straight wins and a division title, in what the Boston media dubbed “Morgan Magic.”
He managed the team for several more years before he was fired at the end of the 1991 season. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.
