The Houston Rockets and Kevin Durant are reportedly finalizing a contract extension, according to a breaking report from ESPN’s Shams Charania.

BREAKING: Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has agreed to a two-year, $90 million contract extension with the franchise, his business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman tells ESPN. The new deal includes a player option in 2027-28. pic.twitter.com/5GdhzgnSPa

“Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has agreed to a two-year, $90 million contract extension with the franchise, his business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman tells ESPN,” Sharania wrote on Sunday morning. “The new deal includes a player option in 2027-28.”

Durant, who turned 37 at the end of September, took less money than he was eligible for in an extension, according to Spotrac’s Keith Smith.

Kevin Durant took a bit more than $30M less than he was eligible to extend for with the Rockets. That should help Houston retain their young core and build the roster out around Durant.

Good work by Durant and Houston to get to a reasonable number that allows flexibility.

The player option for KD in 2027-28 is an important detail for the Rockets, as they will be due to pay Amen Thompson (presumably, a max deal) around that time. However, Smith noted that Durant’s extension allows flexibility for that to happen, as well as the possibility that the Rockets can keep Tari Eason.

It should. Houston should have somewhere between $35-$40M under the second apron going into next season, after extending KD.

Some of that could go to Eason on an extension. Also, good for future flexibility when extending Amen Thompson on a likely max deal starting in 2027-28. https://t.co/Ou27TzTbE3

Durant is a 15-time NBA All-Star, two-time NBA Finals MVP, and one-time NBA MVP. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 62 games played for the Phoenix Suns in 2024-25.

The Rockets are expected to be one of the main contenders in the Western Conference. After a 2024-25 season that saw Houston finish second in the West standings during the regular season, the Rockets went out and added the one thing they were missing — a go-to, proven scorer for crunch time situations.
