When news of Roman Anthony’s contract extension broke, one of the first people who reached out was fellow rookie Marcelo Mayer, who is one of Anthony’s closest friends in baseball.

But while heaping praise on his teammate’s big extension during a pregame media scrum, Mayer was also asked if he’s been approached by the Red Sox about signing his own long-term contract.

“No, not really,” Mayer said. “I’m not really focused on that right now, I’ve got a lot on my plate right now trying to get back on the field with my wrist and stuff, but we’re having a great time right now.”

Mayer is currently on the injured list with a right wrist sprain, and while he says he’s feeling better after receiving a shot earlier this week, he won’t be traveling with the team on the club’s upcoming road trip to his hometown of San Diego so he can continue to focus on his rehab.

As far as Anthony’s extension, he said the two didn’t talk about it beforehand because he didn’t feel like it was his business, but he said he was thrilled for Anthony when he found out the news on Wednesday morning.

“I was watching Narcos on the couch this morning eating a bagel and my buddy texted me about it and I opened Twitter and that’s all I saw,” Mayer said. “I gave him a text, told him how proud of him I was and saw him at the field and gave him a big hug. Super happy for him and his family.”

    Extra innings

Catcher Carlos Narvaez was held out of Wednesday’s game due to knee soreness and was spotted walking gingerly around the clubhouse prior to the game. He will also get Thursday’s off-day to rest, and the club hopes he will be back for Friday’s series opener in San Diego. … Justin Slaten (right shoulder inflammation) will throw a bullpen on Friday.
