Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh might be running away with the American League MVP award.

Raleigh hit home run No. 47 on Sunday night against the New York Mets, extending his lead atop MLB’s home run list. Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani and Philadelphia Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber were tied for second place behind Raleigh with 43 homers apiece as of 10 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Raleigh’s No. 47 happened in the top of the seventh inning against Mets relief pitcher Reed Garrett.

Raleigh is closing in on Salvador Perez’s record of 48 home runs in a single season for a catcher, which was set in 2021 with the Kansas City Royals.

Raleigh is now slashing .250/ .358/ .599/ .957 with 102 RBIs in 2025, to go along with the 47 homers. The Mariners superstar has also stolen 14 bases, quite impressive for a catcher.

It goes without saying that Raleigh is having a career year, and additionally, no one in the AL — and perhaps, in all of baseball — has been more outstanding than Raleigh in 2025.

Raleigh is doing what he’s doing while catching full-time, and he’s also displayed leadership on a club that is currently in the playoff picture in the competitive AL.

This is one of the greatest seasons by a catcher in the history of Major League Baseball — appreciate it before it’s gone.
