The Boston Red Sox have a lot of big decisions to make over the offseason after finding their way to the playoffs in 2025. Perhaps the biggest of the bunch involves third baseman Alex Bregman after he opted out of his contract to hit free agency for the second straight year.

For all intents and purposes, Bregman seemed to be a perfect fit with the Red Sox last season. In 114 games, Bregman hit .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, earning the third All-Star selection of his career.

Boston is expected to make a big push to bring Bregman back to town in free agency, but whether or not they are successful remains to be seen. They also could pivot and pursue other big-name targets, which is a path MLB insider Mark Feinsand recently revealed he could see the front office taking.

“Bregman seemed to enjoy his time with the Red Sox, serving as a solid veteran presence for Boston’s emerging young core, and the Sox should have plenty of money to spend after shedding Rafael Devers’ contract in a midseason trade,” Feinsand wrote for MLB.com.

“If Boston is set on spending big for a free agent, though, it might make more sense to bring in a big power bat (Pete Alonso?) and give Marcelo Mayer a try at third base.”

Armed with loads of money and a deep farm system, everything is on the table for Boston this offseason. Sure, they’d love to reunite with Bregman, but there’s likely a price that the front office isn’t willing to go past. As a result, it will be worth keeping tabs on this situation to see where Bregman ends up landing in free agency.
