The Patriots are elevating a veteran running back from their practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Falcons.

Running back D’Ernest Johnson was added to the active roster Saturday.

Johnson, 29, just signed to the Patriots’ practice squad on Wednesday. The former Browns running back has 989 career rushing yards on 215 carries with three touchdowns. He’s also caught 53 passes for 465 yards in seven NFL seasons.

The Patriots elected to elevate Johnson over their other two practice squad running backs Jonathan Ward and Rushawn Baker.

Johnson was released from the Cardinals’ practice squad Tuesday. He played in one game with the Cardinals and ran the ball once for no gain. The Patriots will also have TreVeyon Henderson and Terrell Jennings available at running back with Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) ruled out.
