UPDATE AGAIN: We have a start time: 4:55 PM.
UPDATE: Well, with less than 30 minutes before first pitch, the Sox have finally acknowledged meteorological science and announced an indefinite delay.
It’s going to be a waiting game today at Fenway Park as the Red Sox and Royals try to complete their final game against each other this season. Here’s what we can say with confidence:
As a result, the Red Sox already announced yesterday evening that the scheduled start time has been pushed back 90 minutes from 1:35 to 3:05pm
However, that’s probably not far enough, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see additional delays.
Here’s a simulated radar from the HRRR model for 3:00pm today.
Things will likely be headed in the right direction by mid afternoon, but the back edge of the precipitation will probably take a couple more hours to fully clear Boston. Here’s a simulated map for around 5:00pm:
This is probably closer to the time they can pull the tarp off and get things ready for play, and once they do, conditions should remain playable through the evening.
So again, it’s going to be a waiting game. The Red Sox and Royals want to get this game in today, and conditions will improve late. However, until that time, we’re all just going to be watching the radar and waiting for things to clear.
