The Boston Red Sox made an under-the-radar trade just days before the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
Blake Sabol was shipped off to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations on Saturday, according to an announcement from Triple-A Worcester.
Sabol, 27, appeared in just eight games this season for Boston before being outrighted off the active roster earlier this month, subjecting him to an eventual trade. Chicago did not need to make a corresponding transaction to acquire him, as he is now on a minor league contract and has been assigned to Triple-A Charlotte
Sox Prospects’ Chris Hatfield pointed out that this likely means there’s a move to be made at catcher, as the depth in Worcester is now down to Seby Zavala, who has an opt out on August 22, and Enderso Lira, who has spent much of the year on the development list.
The Red Sox could promote from within, or perhaps, demote someone. Connor Wong has struggled this season and could be given a reset if the organization is looking to make upgrades at the backup catcher spot in Boston.
