PEMBROKE- Coming into Wednesday evening, both Pembroke and Scituate entered a matchup at Hobomock Arena with six wins each, and that did not change after the Patriot League Fisher rivals came out of the game with a 2-2 tie.
Pembroke (6-2-1) struck first with two first-period goals, and then Scituate (6-3-2) came in the second period and tied it up at two. A combination of good forechecking by both sides and a no-goal call on Pembroke at the final minute of overtime led to the tied result.
“The last couple of games, we’ve come out of the gate pretty slow, and we’ve really just been playing a lot of catch-up.” Pembroke coach Chris Googins noted, “It was fortunate that we came out 2-0, and then Scituate capitalized on a couple of opportunities, made it 2-2 and then just asked the kids to try to give a little bit more on the 50/50 battles, and just make good hockey plates when you get it, and that happened later in the game.”
It didn’t take long for the Titans to strike first at the opening of the game as senior captain Ryan Conway scored just 32 seconds into the match, assisted by freshman Sam Wilson and sophomore Freddy Casavant. Wilson himself then scored later in the period while the puck went through the legs of Sailors’ netminder Mark Francis, which made it 2-0.
Scituate struck back in the second. After killing off a power play from the Titans, the Sailors themselves went on the man advantage, and not long after it started, senior captain Theordore Hare cut the deficit in half with a power play goal. Next, junior defenseman Mike Shanahan was able to get it in the back of the net after a scrum in front of Pembroke netminder Cam Curtis to tie it up at two apiece.
From then on, many great saves by both Francis and Curtis, and good hockey play all around from both teams led themselves into the overtime period. The Sailors went on another power play with just under two minutes left in overtime, and Pembroke was able to get a shot on and scored, but the referees called a no-goal against with just under a minute left. Both sides were unable to score after the no-goal, and it ended 2-2.
“It’s the Patriot League; there is no night you cannot take off,” said Googins. “Every team is good, so if you don’t come ready to play, you could lose 6-0, that’s happened to us, 7-2, so it’s a great league.”
Scituate will be back at Hobomock on Saturday as it hosts Hanover for a 1 p.m. puck drop, while the Titans will host a home match against Whitman-Hanson after the conclusion of Scituate-Hanover.
