Patrice Bergeron is getting his No. 37 hoisted to the rafters at TD Garden on December 1, before Boston hosts Colorado. Fourteenth number the franchise has ever retired. Nineteen seasons, one uniform, six Selke Trophies — the most anyone in NHL history has ever won.
Deserved. Not up for debate.

1,040 points. 15,182 faceoff wins, third all-time. A guy who controlled 63.2% of expected goals in his final season while still winning faceoffs at a 61.1% clip. Those numbers were his alone.
December is four months out. The center problem isn’t waiting that long.
Elias Lindholm signed a seven-year, $54.25 million deal in 2024, and he’s been buried by back injuries and a production drop-off nobody in Boston wants to talk about. Pavel Zacha put up 30 goals and 35 assists and suddenly looks like the guy, except it was also the best season of his career, and one great year doesn’t erase three years of searching. Fraser Minten and Matt Poitras are nice names to file away. Neither of them is the answer yet.
So hang the banner. Bergeron earned every inch of it, and he’s still walking into a building that’s frustrated by the same ceiling problem he left behind three years ago.
Boston still hasn’t found the next him. Maybe stop looking for a copy and start building an actual plan.
