Vrabel and Maye Deny There’s a Patriots Rift. In New England, That’s Usually the Tell.

Nobody holds a press conference to deny something that isn’t at least a little real. Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye spent the back half of last week insisting there’s no rift between them, and recent history says the message itself is the story.

Start with the math. Maye has thrown six interceptions in three games, three of them alone in a 35-6 blowout loss to Jacksonville in Week 3. That’s the kind of stretch that gets a coach standing at a podium saying, “My concern level is very high for this football team” — which Vrabel did days before anyone used the word “rift.”

Here’s the tweet that kicked off the whole cycle:

Vrabel followed that up by drawing a line between practice reps and game reps, saying he “wouldn’t say that the ball has been turned over like he was here today in practice.” That’s a coach keeping score, not protecting his quarterback.

Then came the denial tour. Mike Giardi reported that Vrabel and Maye deny any rift, both remaining focused on correcting mistakes:

Fine. Maybe that’s exactly what it is — two professionals cleaning up a bad week. But coordinated statements don’t happen over nothing, and they definitely don’t happen the same week Maye lands on the injury report with a shoulder issue. “My shoulder didn’t impact my throwing or decision making,” he insists.

None of that gets easier Sunday. Buffalo is 3-0, and Cameron Wolfe has pointed out that Greg Rousseau is a legit early DPOY candidate on a Bills pass rush feasting on a rookie quarterback who’s already turnover-shy. Maye needs to stop the spiral fast against a Bills team like this one, and Christian Gonzalez’s shoulder is banged up too. New England also quietly added depth to the practice squad this week, so just how lopsided this one gets is genuinely in question.

The rift isn’t confirmed. It’s not nothing either. Watch how Vrabel talks about Maye Sunday night, not what he said at the podium on Tuesday.
