A couple of weeks ago when the Baseball Hall of Fame announced its Contemporary Era player ballot, the biggest headline was that Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens would once again be considered despite drawing little support their first time in front of the committee. But tucked away at the bottom of the announcement was a detail that could have major implications for the pair’s Cooperstown hopes. “Beginning with the December 2025 Contemporary Baseball Era ballot for players, any candidate who appears on a ballot and does not receive votes from at least five of the 16 voters will not be…
The Professional Women’s Hockey League is poised to look a lot different in 2025-26. So is the Boston Fleet. A league-wide expansion process triggered the original six franchises to evaluate their futures and ultimately upend their rosters to account for the two new teams — the Seattle Torrent and the Vancouver Goldeneyes — to establish a foundation ahead of the third season of the popular league. Boston’s roster certainly took a sizeable hit, as the Lowell-based club relinquished franchise fixtures Hilary Knight, Hannah Bilka and Sydney Bard, among others, in the expansion proceedings that re-shaped the league’s landscape. Meanwhile, the…
There’s a long list of people who deserve credit for the New England Patriots’ complete turnaround in 2025. Buried deep on the casual fans’ list is wide receivers coach Todd Downing, who does most of his work out of the spotlight. Downing has been on NFL staffs since 2001, working his way up the system the old-fashioned way. He made several stops on the way to becoming Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel’s offensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans in 2021 and 2022. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs says Downing is one of the reasons he chose to come to Foxboro in…
The Boston Celtics are down — but they’re not out. We’re talking, of course, about the 2025 NBA Cup, the league’s third annual in-season tournament that began on Halloween and runs through mid-December. While the Celtics have played well of late — they’ve won three in a row to improve to 8-7 on the young season — they have a lot of work to do if they want to make up ground in Group B of the NBA Cup standings. A quick refresher: Boston’s group consists of the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn Nets. The C’s play…
Justin Dube had one passing and one rushing TD as No. 2 Amesbury topped No. 6 Clinton, 20-14, in a Div. 7 football semifinal. This sets up a matchup with Cohasset for the Div. 7 title. Mekhi White scored two rushing touchdowns and secured a game-winning interception as Randolph defeated Nashoba Tech 20-12 to advance to the Div. 8 state championship, setting up a matchup with West Boylston in the final. Boys soccer Jason Piacenti scored a pair of goals, Sebby DiCarlo added another as West Springfield secured a 3-0 win over Duxbury to claim the Div. 2 state championship.…
CINCINNATI (AP) — Joe Flacco will make one more start at quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals after Joe Burrow was not activated to the roster for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.Burrow was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report after taking first-team snaps this week as he continues his comeback from a turf toe injury. The six-year veteran was downgraded to out on Saturday instead of being taken off injured reserve.Cincinnati’s franchise quarterback suffered the injury to his left big toe during the first half of the Sept. 14 game against Jacksonville.Assuming he has no major setbacks, Burrow is…
The Boston Red Sox have a solid starting rotation and plenty of depth, but could benefit from adding another frontline starter. Earlier this month, Craig Breslow indicated the team would only pursue starting pitchers who could pitch in the top half of their rotation. The Red Sox have both free agency and the trade market at their disposal to improve their starting rotation. While a player like Framber Valdez or Dylan Cease would be great, their price tag may end up restricting the Red Sox in other spots. Trading for a pitcher could be cheaper, at least financially, and there…
2025 In A Discarded-On-The-Dugout-Floor NutshellRichard Fitts, acquired a couple of offseasons ago for Alex Verdugo, had some difficulties finding his spot in the rotation, along with the strike zone, and also dealth with the worst struggle of all, injuries. At the age of 25, Richard Fitts ticked his velocity up a few notches in 2025. Had he qualified, his 95.7 average velocity on his fastball would be in the upper 30 percent, and he touched 99 on occasion. He also increased his arsenal to six pitches, adding a changeup and a curveball, while tweaking the slider to increase its active velocity…
MILTON — Norwell has felt the heartbreak and the elation that playing in a state final can bring. The Clippers got to experience the latter again Saturday. After falling in last year’s state championship bout, the top-seeded Clippers secured an undefeated season and their second Division 3 state boys soccer title in three years by edging No. 4 Greater New Bedford Voke, 1-0, at Curry College’s Katz Field. “I just have a tremendous sense of pride and admiration and love for this group for the way they were able to, in this game, stay physically tough,” Norwell head coach Micheal…
