Jaylen Brown was not the most accomplished athlete in this arena. It doesn’t happen often.  It was the case, however, when the four-time NBA All-Star jumped into the 10-lane pool at the Connell Recreation Center on the campus of Boston College. Brown, who has trained in the water over the last four offseasons, was there to work with five-time Olympian and current Boston College swim coach Dara Torres.  Torres received a request from Celtics trainer Drew Moore asking if any Eagles coaches would train a hoopster in the water. The four-time gold medalist graciously accepted and found out it was…

Red Sox Report Card Week continues at the Herald with a starting rotation that ran the gamut from A+ to F in 2025. The Red Sox had 15 pitchers make at least one start this season, a sign of the organization’s newfound depth, as well as the toll that injuries and ineffectiveness took on a team whose pitching staff was hanging by a thread at season’s end. For clarity’s sake, several pitchers fall under the ‘Incomplete’ category, and openers like Brennan Bernardino will be graded in the reliever report card. Brayan Bello: A- Bello made enormous strides in his third…

Week 6 featured some noteworthy games, including one out of the Central Mass. ranks as Uxbridge saw its 31-game winning streak snapped with a 39-33 overtime loss to Auburn. There were intriguing upsets across the board as well, with Brockton toppling previously-ranked Weymouth, 19-6, most notably. Usual heavy hitters Catholic Memorial, St. John’s Prep, Springfield Central and King Philip have led the pack for the majority of the season, with some newcomers (Barnstable, Winchester) joining them in the hunt for the Herald’s top spot. Who else is making a push as we rapidly close in on postseason play with three…

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal figures to be a prominent talking point this MLB offseason. Skubal becomes a free agent next offseason, which has led some people (The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal included) to argue that Detroit should consider trading Skubal this winter. New intel on Skubal from The New York Post’s Jon Heyman didn’t do anything to diffuse the rumors surrounding Detroit’s dominant lefty. Heyman indicated that there is a gargantuan gap in contract negotiations between Skubal and the Tigers. This report is music to the ears of other teams interested in Skubal, of course. Then again, whoever ends up…

I’ve been a Pokemon fan for just as long as I’ve been a Red Sox fan. With the release of Pokemon Legends Z-A for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 today, I thought it could be fun to match up Red Sox players with their Pokémon counterparts and put a team together. Note that all of these counterparts are purely vibes-based. Also note that this team would assuredly be terrible in-game. Either way, let’s get started!Garrett Crochet – PigniteThis pairing was really the genesis for this entire piece, as while I was racking my brain trying to figure out…

Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week during the NFL regular season, I will drop five Patriots-related thoughts on Friday to recap the week that was in Foxboro and look ahead to kickoff. Ready, set, football. 1. Trade deadline wish list The NFL trade deadline is less than three weeks away. Most years, all the trade speculation inside and outside of team headquarters leads to little action. But where’s the fun in that? Odds are the Patriots will be 6-3 or 7-2 heading into the deadline, meaning they will be in a strong position to add to a likely playoff…

CANTON – After generating a slew of offensive opportunities it couldn’t finish off in a decisive loss to No. 1 Uxbridge on October 3, the No. 2 Walpole field hockey team felt a potential need for a tweak to its attack. The Porkers (14-1) got more of what they looked for Thursday night in their biggest challenge since, earning a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten No. 11 Canton. Kate Schneider and Caroline Handwerk each scored in the third quarter to separate from a halftime draw, finally overcoming a standout job from Bulldogs goalie Shealyn Murphy (15 saves). Canton (11-1-3) and…

The Boston Celtics wrapped up their preseason action on Wednesday night with a 110-108 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The next time they take the court, the games will officially count, and it’s safe to say excitement for the new season is high. While the C’s have done the majority of their offseason work already, there are still a few items they need to cross off before taking the court for their season-opener next week. Ahead of their preseason finale, one of those moves was made, as the team waived RJ Luis Jr., who was acquired in a trade with…

The Bruins have proven through one week into the season that, no, they are not going to be an easy out like they were last year. But unfortunately for them, they’re also proving that they’re not the kind of team that should be trading goals with the likes of the Vegas Golden Knights. After their furious comeback attempt from a three-goal deficit against the Tampa Bay Lightning fell short on Monday, the B’s found themselves in a similar situation with the Knights on Thursday and came out with the same result — a close-but-no-cigar loss. Despite the valiant efforts, catch-up…
