FOXBORO — The Patriots were missing two veteran starters at practice Wednesday. Safety Jaylinn Hawkins (hamstring) and outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson (knee) both did not participate. DT Christian Barmore (not injury related/other), DT Milton Williams (ankle) and G Jared Wilson (ankle/knee) were limited in Wednesday’s session. LT Will Campbell (shoulder), LB Marte Mapu (neck), RG Mike Onwenu (shoulder) and Tavai were full participants. The statuses of Chaisson, Hawkins and Wilson bear monitoring this week. If Wilson can’t play, then Ben Brown would fill in at left guard. Hawkins’ spot would likely be filled by veteran safety Kyle Dugger. Keion White…

FOXBORO — Stefon Diggs knows what it’s like. After four years with the Bills, he’s seen teams visit Orchard Park and briefly lose their faculties thanks in part to the environment stirred up by Buffalo’s fanbase. “It’s crazy because, you know, being on the other side of it, I saw it,” Diggs said Wednesday. “I witnessed it, multiple times, week in and week out just being on the other side.” Diggs and the Patriots will play in front of what’s expected to be a raucous crowd on Sunday Night Football — a crowd which may be particularly riled up to…
The New England Patriots dominated the Carolina Panthers in Week 4, but they have to quickly turn their attention to Week 5, because they have a difficult matchup against the Buffalo Bills on their hands. Since the fall of the Patriots’ dynasty, the Bills have emerged as the top team in the AFC East, having won the division each of the past five years. Buffalo hasn’t lost a game yet this season, which goes to show just how tough this game is going to be for New England. Nobody knows better than Stefon Diggs how talented the Bills are. Diggs…
NEW YORK — When Alex Bregman and Trevor Story took the field at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday for Game 1 of the AL Wild Card series, neither was anywhere close to 100%. Not due to injury or a season’s worth of wear and tear, but because of a viral illness that has been working its way through the Red Sox family over the past few days. Bregman came down ill first and traveled to New York separate from the rest of the team in order to avoid getting his teammates sick. He arrived shortly before first pitch on Tuesday, by…
NEW YORK (AP) — Lucas Giolito doesn’t appear to have structural damage to his right elbow but is unlikely to pitch for the Boston Red Sox during the postseason.A 31-year-old right-hander, Giolito was left off Boston’s roster for the Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees because of elbow pain and was examined by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. Dugas repaired the ulnar collateral ligament in Giolito’s right elbow with internal brace surgery on March 12 last year.“From everything I am hearing there’s no structural damage, which is great, right? There’s a slim chance he…
In the final days of the regular season, we spent our time thinking about which teams would make the playoffs, followed by identifying the opening opponents and potential bracket paths through the American League. The next think we think about is the game times, and the 6:00 starts for this entire week works in the East Coast fans’ favor, as opposed to fans of teams in Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, and San Diego, all of whom have three straight days of game times during the 9-to-5 workday. The last thing that comes to mind until Game One actually starts is the broadcasters.…
By TIM REYNOLDS MIAMI (AP) — Not even half of the spots in the 48-team field have been claimed. The schedule of matches won’t be finalized until December. And other than host nations U.S., Canada and Mexico, nobody has any idea where or when they’ll be playing. Millions of soccer fans worldwide evidently don’t seem to mind any of those points. Tickets to next year’s FIFA World Cup officially go on sale Wednesday. The buyers will be those who were selected, out of 4.5 million applicants in a lottery that took place last month, to have the first formal chance…
Jordan Harris is thrilled he signed a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins. When Harris hit free agency on July 1, he wasn’t sure where he was going to go. But when the Bruins showed interest in him, he knew he would sign with Boston. Harris is from Haverhill, Mass., and getting to play for his hometown team was something he couldn’t pass up. “I was really excited when I heard Boston could be a possibility,” Harris recently said to BostonBruins.com. “I told my parents and everything once I found out. They were so pumped – my whole family, buddies.”…

NEW YORK — This year Aroldis Chapman put together one of the most dominant seasons by a reliever in MLB history, but with three outs to go in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card series things almost went completely off the rails. After coming on to record the final out of the eighth, Chapman returned for the bottom of the ninth and immediately gave up three consecutive Yankees singles to load the bases with nobody out. At that moment it looked like the Red Sox could be headed for a crushing defeat, but after a brief mound visit Chapman…
