Boston Red Sox fans aren’t going to like the sound of this. The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly in contact with Alex Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, as they consider signing the third baseman.

Earlier in December, The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon reported that the Blue Jays viewed Bregman as a backup plan for if they didn’t end up signing either of Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette.

On Saturday, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal provided an update on the situation: Bregman’s people and the Blue Jays are in conversation.

“Add the Toronto Blue Jays to the list of teams showing interest in free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman,” Rosenthal wrote (subscription required).

“(Blue Jays) team officials have been in recent contact with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, according to sources briefed on the conversations,” Rosenthal continued. “Ideally, the Jays want to add a left-handed hitter, but either the right-handed Bregman or Bichette would fit their defensive alignment better than Tucker or Cody Bellinger, both of whom bat left.”

Rosenthal then speculated as to what Toronto’s infield alignment would look like with Bregman on the roster; he also noted that Bregman has a pair of former teammates on the Blue Jays currently.

“Bregman almost certainly would stay at third for the Jays, who then would play Ernie Clement at second and Addison Barger in right, with George Springer and Anthony Santander also manning the outfield and serving as DHs,” Rosenthal wrote. “Adding to the possible fit with Toronto: Two of Bregman’s former Houston Astros teammates, Springer and outfielder Myles Straw, are among the leading voices in the Jays’ clubhouse, which already is one of the game’s most cohesive.”

Bregman has also been linked to the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and Arizona Diamondbacks recently.

For most, if not all of the offseason, the Red Sox have been viewed as the most likely landing spot for Bregman.

In 2025, Bregman embarked on a new chapter with the Red Sox after signing as a free agent. Despite a quad strain that landed him on the injured list for around six weeks, Bregman posted a .273 batting average with 18 home runs, 62 RBI, and an .821 OPS over 114 games. His veteran presence and steady production played a role in Boston’s 89-73 finish, clinching a Wild Card spot—their first postseason berth since 2021.

Across his 10-year MLB career, Bregman has solidified his status as an elite third baseman. Drafted second overall by the Houston Astros in 2015, he debuted in 2016 and contributed to World Series victories in 2017 and 2022. Accumulating a .272 lifetime average, 209 home runs, 725 RBI, and 758 runs scored in 1,225 games, Bregman has earned three All-Star nods, a 2019 Silver Slugger, and a 2024 Gold Glove.
