The Patriots are gearing up to compete in the Super Bowl on Feb. 8, while one of their former quarterbacks might be on the trading block the week of the big game.

CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan highlighted several players who might be on the trading block during Super Bowl week, including former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.

“Brock Purdy is San Francisco’s franchise quarterback, but Mac Jones did endear himself when filling in as the Niners starter with Purdy injured,” Sullivan wrote on Thursday. “Jones went 5-3 as the starter and completed 69.6% of his passes with a 97.4 passer rating.

“As we noted with (Kyler) Murray above, this year’s rookie QB class isn’t particularly strong, which may create a robust market for veterans like Jones. On top of that, Jones does fit the profile of a former first-round QB turned castoff, who is ripe for a career resurgence.”

This past offseason, the 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $8.4 million contract. With several teams likely in need of a starting quarterback next season, Jones could find himself on the radar of multiple franchises.

Sullivan believed it would take a third-round pick for a team to acquire Jones, which wouldn’t be a bad deal for a team looking to have him as its bridge quarterback.

The 49ers are likely to trade Jones this offseason, but it probably won’t happen during Super Bowl week. Most trades typically don’t begin until the new league year starts in March.
