Mac Jones reportedly had an unfortunate experience before playing one of the best games of his career.

Starting in place of Brock Purdy, Jones led the San Francisco 49ers to a 26-23 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams on “Thursday Night Football.” The former New England Patriots quarterback reportedly had an unusual start to the day.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Jones saw a floating dead body that morning. He told teammates he noticed the body while observing the water from his hotel balcony in Marina del Rey.

As of Friday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the situation remained under investigation.

Later that evening, Jones steered the 49ers to a road upset win over their division rival. The former first-round pick compiled 342 passing yards and two touchdowns, connecting with former Patriots teammate Kendrick Bourne 10 times for 142 yards.

The 49ers improved to 4-1 and are 3-0 when Jones starts. He’s posted 905 passing yards, six touchdowns and one interception with a career-high 99.1 quarterback rating.

Despite the understudy’s success, San Francisco didn’t entertain any quarterback controversy when Purdy was ready to play in Week 4. That will likely remain the case when he can return from a toe injury, but the 49ers probably won’t feel much pressure to rush him back again until he’s fully healthy.

The 49ers will stay on the road to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6. Jones may draw another start in a game the NFL flexed to 4:25 p.m. ET in place of the Patriots.
