The Patriots have released running back Antonio Gibson, the team announced Monday.

Gibson, 27, is recovering from a season-ending torn ACL he suffered during a Week 5 win at Buffalo in early October. Prior to his injury, he had been the Patriots’ lead kick returner and No. 3 running back behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.

Gibson was set to enter the last year of the free-agent contract he signed in 2024. His release creates more than $2 million in cap space for the Patriots, who are now scheduled to have more than $38 million entering the 2026 league year.

Over two-plus seasons in New England, Gibson rushed for 644 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry and caught 25 passes for 212 yards. Gibson became a fixture on kick return, where he averaged 27.2 yards per return and ran back a 90-yard touchdown at Miami in Week 2, the first win of the Mike Vrabel era.

He joined the Patriots after spending the first four years of his career in Washington, where he entered the league as a third-round pick out of Memphis in 2020. Gibson rushed for 1,000 yards in his second season, then suffered from fumbling issues over his final years with the Commanders.

His exit leaves the Patriots with Stevenson, Henderson, Terrell Jennings and Lan Larison on the running back depth chart.
