The Boston Celtics are starting to draw some attention across the NBA, thanks to the fact that they have won four of their past five games. In the G League, though, one of their two-way players is beginning to turn heads with his strong play for the Maine Celtics. That player would be guard Ron Harper Jr., who has taken on a big role for Maine early on in the new G League campaign. While Harper has already taken the court for Boston three times this year, he’s been getting some more work in with Maine this month. The early…

If you’re a Red Sox fan who wanted the team to add an ace (or at least a legit No. 2 starter) to the rotation during the offseason, then you probably weren’t overly hyped about the Sonny Gray trade on Tuesday. Then again, Gray does have a long track record of success at the MLB level. The Red Sox acquired Gray and $20 million from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts and left-handed pitcher Brandon Clarke. Gray is 36 years old and entering the final year of his contract. He posted a 4.28 ERA with…

When the season ended last month Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow identified several areas of need he expected to focus on this offseason. One was improving the club’s rotation, specifically by adding a frontline starter who could potentially start a playoff game. Tuesday morning, Breslow did just that. This week the Red Sox made their first big move of the winter, acquiring veteran right-hander Sonny Gray and cash considerations from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for right-hander Richard Fitts, left-handed pitching prospect Brandon Clarke and either a player to be named later or cash. The 36-year-old Gray…

When the offseason began Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said one of the team’s priorities would be adding a starting pitcher to the front of the rotation who could slot in behind Garrett Crochet as the club’s No. 2 starter. Will Sonny Gray be that guy? Asked directly Tuesday night, Breslow declined to say. “I don’t know how much sense it makes in November to put a number on a guy. Sonny is a very talented major league pitcher, the seasons that he’s put up pretty consistently indicate that to be the case,” Breslow said. “That said, we…

For a Red Sox organization with years of devastating pitching injuries, the appeal of adding a starter like right-hander Sonny Gray, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, was clear: A proven track record of putting up high inning and strikeout totals throughout his 13-year career. “When you think about what Sonny has been in this league, it’s a guy who’s pitched at the front of rotations, and you know, those things that we think pitchers carry from year to year, things like strikeout rates and walk rates and ability to stay off barrels, he excels there,” said Red…

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is having an outstanding start to the season. Although he occasionally finds himself in tricky situations, he responds quickly and bounces back effectively. Former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer has been impressed by the confidence Maye has shown this season. “It’s just amazing to me how he weathers the storm and just has that internal confidence,” Hoyer said on Tuesday during “WEEI Afternoons”. “That’s when the folklore of a player starts to grow.” Maye has passed for 3,130 yards and thrown 21 touchdowns against just six interceptions this season. However, what stands out most about…

Most can only dream of playing a game at Fenway Park. Westin McNeilly had a rare opportunity Tuesday night and decided to make it count. The junior quarterback finished 12-of-24 passing, registering a pair of touchdowns as Wakefield defeated Melrose for the fifth consecutive season in its annual Thanksgiving rivalry, 20-9. “It’s crazy,” said McNeilly. “Our coach talked about it before the game – tunnel vision. It’s obviously a beautiful place, but we can’t get distracted. We each (had) to get the job done. That’s just what we did.” In the early stages of Tuesday night’s bout, players struggled to…
